EMDR and Attachment Trauma

Treating attachment trauma with EMDR therapy

Clinicians should be knowledgeable about attachment trauma to understand how it creates vulnerability to later distressing events; impacts the client’s affect regulation, self-esteem, and relationships; and its effects on treatment and the therapeutic relationship.

Attachment trauma is the consequence of the failures of caregivers in meeting the needs of the child.  Infants are wired to attach to the caregiver for safety.  But if the caregiver is dangerous, then a division in the personality occurs, resulting in a disorganised attachment style. This results in (1) the multiplicity of non integrated representations of self and others   (2) the metacognitive or mentalisation deficits, i.e., interfering with the ability to reflect on one’s own and other people’s mental states  and (3) the relational dilemmas, self-esteem, and affect regulation difficulties. Attachment trauma not only includes what happened, but also what did not happen, e.g. neglect, misattunement, and the seeming small, but very impactful experiences such as mother’s angry look, or being ignored when needing help.  Often the worst part of a trauma is not what happened, but being alone afterwards, with no comfort or support.   These failures in meeting the needs of the child give rise to insecure or disorganised attachment styles which can impact the child for a lifetime and underlie a host of clinical disorders, including complex trauma and dissociative disorders.   EMDR therapy can be integrated with an overall  treatment plan to treat attachment trauma.  and  will be illustrated and demonstrated with video tapes of sessions and live demonstrations.
